Colorado Umbrella Insurance

A single serious accident can exceed the liability limits on your home or auto policy. A personal umbrella provides $1M–$5M of additional coverage for a few hundred dollars a year. It is one of the most cost-effective protections available.

Why this coverage matters

Who needs umbrella coverage in Colorado

Landlords: Elevated liability exposure

Rental properties significantly increase your liability exposure. A tenant or visitor injured on your property can sue you personally. A judgment that exceeds your landlord policy limits — typically $300,000 — comes directly from your personal assets. An umbrella policy provides an additional $1M–$5M of protection above your landlord policy for a few hundred dollars per year.

Families with teen drivers: The highest-risk scenario

Teen drivers are involved in accidents at a rate 3–4 times higher than experienced drivers. A serious accident involving a teen driver can easily generate a liability claim of $500,000–$2M. If your auto policy has $300,000 in liability coverage, the excess comes from your personal assets without an umbrella. Adding an umbrella when you add a teen driver is one of the most important coverage decisions a family can make.

High-net-worth individuals: Asset protection

The more assets you have, the more you have to lose in a lawsuit. Standard home and auto liability limits of $300,000–$500,000 may be adequate for someone with modest assets, but inadequate for someone with significant home equity, investment accounts, or business interests. An umbrella policy protects those assets from judgments that exceed your underlying policy limits.

How a personal umbrella policy works

A personal umbrella policy sits above your home, auto, and rental property policies. When a covered liability claim exceeds your underlying policy limits, the umbrella pays the excess — up to your umbrella limit. For example, if you are at fault in a serious auto accident and the total claim is $800,000, your auto policy pays its $300,000 limit and your umbrella pays the remaining $500,000.

Umbrella policies also provide coverage for some liability claims that underlying policies exclude — defamation, libel, slander, invasion of privacy, and false arrest. These are increasingly relevant in an era of social media and online reviews.

Underlying coverage requirements: What you need before adding an umbrella

Umbrella carriers require minimum underlying liability limits on your home and auto policies. Most require at least 100/300/100 for auto ($100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident, $100,000 property damage) and $300,000 for homeowners. If your current policies have lower limits, you will need to increase them before adding an umbrella.

We review underlying limits as part of every umbrella quote. If your current policies need to be adjusted to meet umbrella requirements, we handle that as part of the same transaction.

Personal vs. commercial umbrella: Which do you need?

A personal umbrella covers personal liability — home, auto, and rental properties held personally. A commercial umbrella covers business liability above your commercial GL, commercial auto, and employers liability policies.

If you have both personal and business exposures, you may need both. We assess your full risk profile and recommend the right combination. For many small business owners, a personal umbrella and a commercial umbrella together provide comprehensive excess liability protection at a combined cost of $400–$800 per year.
