Getting Married? Here Is What to Do With Your Insurance.
Marriage is a qualifying life event that lets you update your policies outside of open enrollment. Done right, combining policies saves money. Done wrong, you end up with gaps.

Insure the ring
An engagement ring is typically worth $5,000-$15,000. Standard homeowners and renters policies cap jewelry coverage at $1,000-$2,500. A scheduled personal property endorsement covers the full appraised value for about $1-$2 per $100 of value per year.
Combine auto policies
Combining two auto policies onto one multi-car policy typically saves 10-25%. The savings are largest when both drivers have clean records. If one spouse has a poor driving record, it may be cheaper to keep separate policies — we will run the numbers.
Update homeowners or renters policy
If you are moving in together, one of you needs to cancel your policy and be added to the other's. If you are buying a home together, you need a new homeowners policy. Make sure the coverage limits reflect the combined value of both households' belongings.
Update beneficiaries
Update beneficiaries on life insurance, 401(k), IRA, and any other accounts. This is one of the most commonly forgotten steps after a wedding.
Review life insurance
If neither of you has life insurance, now is the time. If one of you has it, check whether the coverage amount is still adequate for a two-income household with shared financial obligations.
Insuring Your Engagement Ring
A scheduled personal property endorsement (also called a floater) covers your ring for its full appraised value — loss, theft, mysterious disappearance, and accidental damage. It typically costs $1-$2 per $100 of value per year. A $10,000 ring costs about $100-$200/year to insure properly. Get an appraisal within 30 days of purchase.
Name Change on Policies
If you are changing your name, update it on all insurance policies — auto, homeowners, life, health. A name mismatch between your ID and your policy can complicate a claim. We handle the updates across all your policies in one call.
